Dog Breeds: Mutts vs Purebreds

Being a purebred owners suggests that owners are"planners" by nature. Have a distinctive set of taste and weighs pros & cons.
Mixed breed owners are viewed as more laid back and better adapted to go with the flow. Take chances and make choices on emotions.

Dog Size: Large vs Small

Having larger dogs suggest owners enjoy outdoor activities and sports. They are more tolerant of picking up bigger waste, wiping muddy paws and piles of drool. Studies show correlation between large dogs and men who perceive themselves as macho.

Smaller dog owners prefer walking in parks as to mountainsides. Viewed as cleaner, daintier and require less space.

Dog Coat: Long vs Short

Long coated dog owners put emphasis on visiting the spa and getting frequent haircuts.

Short coated dog owners like the convenience of prepackaged options and tend to be more trustworthy consumers.

Dog Treatment: Spoiled vs Ignored

Spoiled dog owners that let their pooch snuggle in bed are said to be affectionate and soft hearted. Love to spoil those close to them.

Dogs who spend most of their time outside or in kennels owners lack empathy.

Dog Behavior: Well-Trained vs Misbehaved

Well trained dogs are reflections of a responsible, happy, organized owners.

Behavior problems the owners are anxious, impatient and unsatisfied.

These are merely observations that give us something to think about.

Winter Paw Care For Dogs

Rock salt and most chemical de-icers irritate a dog's paw and turns winter walks into a painful ordeal. Stay away from heavy salted areas. Inspect your dogs paws after outdoor play and walks. Check between toes and foot pads for cracks in the skin, inflammation areas for splinters, embedded gravel and etc.

When snow and stuck stick beneath your dogs paws, lumps of ice and mixed with rock salt and gravel can build up in the pads and toes and makes walking hurt. Always wash your dogs paws with warm water after outdoor play and walks. Do Not allow your dog to lick and/or chew lumps of ice off their feet. Ingesting rock salt or chemical de-icers can have toxic effects on your pet.

After washing you dogs feet with warm water apply Vaseline or Bag Balm to foot pads to soothe irritated pads. This can also be applied before walks. Cut any long hair between pads and toes, using sharp grooming scissors. Keep the hair even with the pads surface. Dogs with long feathering on front or back of the legs, keep this trimmed so it does not drag on the ground.
It's important to keep you dog's nails trimmed year long, but crucial in the winter. Untrimmed nails can lead to splayed feet, sore nail beds and even torn nails. When nails are long, the toe spreads apart when waking, leaving more space for snow and ice to build up.

Chicken Jerky Treats Sicken Dogs

Reports of illnesses in dogs given chicken jerky treats have spiked dramatically following a new government warning about pet snacks made in China.

Dog owners and veterinarians are reporting that animals have been stricken with a range of symptoms within hours or days of eating chicken jerky, including serious problems such as kidney failure and Fanconi syndrome, a condition marked by low blood sugar.

Symptoms may include decreased appetite, decreased activity, vomiting, diarrhea, increased water consumption and increased urination. If dogs show any of these signs, stop feeding the animal the chicken jerky products, FDA officials said. If signs are severe or persist for more than 24 hours, seek veterinary help.

Though the illnesses appear tied to chicken jerky products manufactured in China, the source of the problem remains a mystery, said Siobhan DeLancey, an FDA spokeswoman.

Despite extensive chemical and microbiological testing, the agency has not identified problems with a specific contaminant -- or a specific brand or type of treat.

Pet Food Recall

Advanced Animal Nutrition in Thayer, MO has issued a pet food recall of some of their dry dog foods due to aflatoxin.

Thayer is recalling three dry dog food products, because of high levels of fungus aflatoxin. Which is a naturally occurring chemical that comes from a fungus sometimes found on corn and in other crops. It can cause sever liver damage and in rare cases death. A companies spokesperson said that aflatoxin was found in one of the ingredients but not in any finished products. However, to be cautious, they are recalling the products mentioned below.

Holiday Safety Tips For A Happy & Safe Holiday Season

Everyone wants their holidays to be bright and beautiful, but this can also lead to many problems for your pets. We want everyone to have a happy and safe holiday and no emergency vet visits so here are some helpful hints:

Poisonous Plants:
Holly leave & berries can cause stomach upsets and even be fatal for dogs

Mistletoe can cause stomach upsets and heart collapses

Hibiscus can cause diarrhea

Poinsettias have irritating sap that causes blistering in the mouth and stomach upsets

Decorations and Wrappings:
Ribbon, yarn and string causes intestinal obstruction and bunching of intestines. Which will require surgery and can be fatal

Ribbons on pets necks are cute but very dangerous

Adhesives and Glue smells are very attactant to dogs, but are toxic

Potpourri oils are toxic

Candles can cause burns and fires

Batteries, Perfumes and After-shaves are also toxic

Tree needles can be toxic and cause mouth and stomach irritation

Tinsels cause blockages that most often need surgery

Angel hair, flocking and artificial snow are mildly toxic

Chewing of electrical cords cause burns in the mouth, electrical shocks and death by electrocution

Food on the tree cause many problems, candy canes, gingerbread people, popcorn, raisin and cranberries are just asking for trouble.

Food:
Rich, fatty foods, like gravy or grease, can cause problems ranging from stomach upsets to pancreatitis, which is an inflammation of the pancreas resulting in pain, vomiting, and dehydration.

Alcohol can cause serious intoxications in pets, and many dogs are attracted to it. Every year hundreds of dogs die after a single bout of alcohol consumption.

Chocolate, coffee, and tea all contain dangerous components called xanthines, which cause nervous system or urinary system damage and heart muscle stimulation. Chocolate, with theobromine, is especially a problem because dogs love its flavor. Problems from ingestion range from diarrhea to seizures and death. Unsweetened baking chocolate and dark chocolate are the worst culprits, but all chocolate, fudge, and other candy should be placed out of your dog's reach.

Bones from fish, meat, or poultry can also cause problems if swallowed. Even small bones can splinter causing lacerations (tearing) throughout the intestinal tract. Rawhides, Kong toys, and hardened, sterilized bones would be better alternatives.

Tobacco products can be fatal to pets, if ingested. Signs of poisoning develop within 15 to 45 minutes and include excitation, salivation, vomiting, and diarrhea. Pets may develop seizures, collapse and die from cardiac arrest. Keep cigarettes, cigars, tobacco, nicotine gum and patches, and ashtrays out of the reach of pets. Empty ashtrays frequently since cigarette butts contain about 25% of the total nicotine in a cigarette.

Uncooked yeast dough can expand and produce gas in the digestive system, causing pain and possible rupture of the stomach or intestines.

Grapes and raisins contain an unknown toxin, which can damage the kidneys.

The artificial sweetner, xylitol, that is present in some gums, breath mints, candy, and other human food can be very toxic to dogs.

Macadamia nuts contain an unknown toxin, which can affect the digestive and nervous systems and muscles of dogs.

Meat juices on plastic or aluminum foil left on countertops are very tempting. If ingested, plastic or foil wrap (cellophane candy wrappers or food wrap) can cause choking or intestinal obstruction.

Meat-soaked strings from rump roasts are also enticing. Ingestion can cause a surgical emergency called a 'linear string foreign body' in the intestines.

To be safe, put away food immediately, and pet-proof your garbage. Garbage contains all kinds of other hazards for your dog such as plastic wrap and bags, 6-pack beverage holders that could cause strangulation, fat trimmings, bones, and pieces of ribbon or tinsel.

Feed your pet(s) before a party so they will not be so apt to beg or steal food.

Flexi-Leads Why They Are Not Safe!

Flexi-Leads are not only unsafe for your dog, but for you as well.

Below is some great insight from an article "Why I hate Flexi-Leads" by Smartdogs Weblog 7/25/08 by Sebastian Schmieg

I) At big box pet stores you see Fido in aisle two urinating or shop-lifting treats, while the owner is
chatting in another aisle. Or you are accosted in parks and/or sidewalk by lunging dogs, who's owners smile or refuse to make eye contact with you. Flexi-leads allow the dog to train themselves to behave badly when out in public.

II) Seem to be nearly perfectly designed to teach dogs to pull. They pull and get rewarded with more space and freedom. Stop pulling and get punished with the collar and leash snapping (pulling) back on them.

III) Freedom is something that should be earned not given. Letting a dog that hasn't been given proper guidance and training on rules and boundaries for society make their own decision is more confusing for the dog.

IV) Causes the handler to be in a position of being reactive instead of proactive on walks. Dogs that think they make the decision and are entitle to unlimited space and freedom will never recognize the owner as a leader.

V) Safety Issues. a) cord and/or lead can cause burns to both humans and canine body parts, b) get wrapped around body parts that can cause injuries from tripping to worse case of amputation or strangulation.

VI) When a dog is more than 10-25' beyond an inattentive owner a) can be hit by a car, b) attacked by another dog, or c) smacked or pepper-sprayed by a person who does not welcome his advances.

VII) Most leash laws specify a 6' or less law so an extended flexi leas does not comply.

VIII) Handles-even if you are a conscientious owner it is darn near impossible to control from 15' away. If you drop the handle when your dog bolts away the noise of a dragging handle may startle them and he may run even faster and go even farther.

1) 10/19/11 Writer states: That they have obtained two ugly scars from other people's careless use of flexi-leads. (1) on the NECK when someone behind allowed their dog to barrel down a stairway and at the bottom the dog turned 90 degrees and clotheslined her neck. (2) walking with a friend who's dog was on a flexi-lead and the dog took an unexpected turn cutting two deep cuts on the back of her knees from the tape style.

2) 10/20/11 Writer states: Work in vet's office and have assisted in a large number of emergencies of dogs being hit by cars while chasing a squirrel, dogs in dog fights all that are related to being on flexi-leads. Also makes a great statement and I quote "Dogs are still animals and no matter how well trained they are, they can still react to things beyond our control."

3) 10/20/11 Writer states: Used flexi-lead for large dogs on a 45lb pit bull mix the dog bolted away and pulled the cord off the plastic handle. Luckily they were walking on a farm with many acres of land but the possibilities of what could have happened in a dog park or near a busy street are endless.

So in closing dog owners need to always be aware of everything around them and their pets. Even though your dog maybe well behaved and/or friendly with other people and/or dogs not all dogs and/or people that you encounter along your way are and/or feel the same way towards your dog.

Most people do not think of the Thanksgiving Holiday as being a safety hazard for your pets, but actually it can be very dangerous. Below is a list of things to watch out for:

1) Fatty foods: Too much fatty, rich or unfamiliar goods give pet pancreatitis or gastroenteritis.
2) Diet and Exercise: Disruption in his dietary routine can cause upset stomach, diarrhea/vomiting maintain exercise and diet routine.
3) Bones: Certain bones can lacerate or obstruct pets inside.
4) Onions: widely used and found in many foods can destroy red blood cells, which can lead to anemia.
5) Grapes and Raisins: Contain toxins that cause kidney damage.
6) Chocolate: Can actually be fatal.
7) Food wrappings: Aluminum foil, wax paper can cause intestinal obstruction.
8) Fresh water: Make sure there is always fresh water. The more people in the house the more chances of the water bowl being spilled.
9) Quiet time: Watch behavior changes around the holidays. Festivities can be too much stress.
10) Garbage: Keep securely fastened.

Researcher's Link Health Problems to Genetically Modified Foods

Research Scientist Arpad Pusztai notes that through his research of Genetically Modified potatoes they are seeing internal modifications in dogs. Their intestines and stomach are enlarged, kidneys and liver are smaller than normal and the immune systems are significantly suffering.

Avoiding processed corn, wheat and soy products for your pets safety. Feeding a more natural raw diet is recommended. While remembering that animals fed on genetically modified foods are altered animals so you are consuming a different animal when you feed these.

Harmful Bacteria Found in Lake Chauncy: Resident Worried About Dogs

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) issued a public health advisory for cyanobacteria in Lake Chauncy.

“The algae bloom has the appearance of pea soup and is capable of producing toxins that can be dangerous to humans and pets,” reads a statement from the Westborough Board of Health (BOH).

According to the Centers for Disease Control, cyanobacteria is also known as blue-green algae. They are usually too small to be seen, but can sometimes form visible colonies. When that happens, the water becomes cloudy, the algae usually floats to the surface and can be many inches thick.

People and pets should avoid contact with the algae. Avoid swallowing the water. Rinse off after any contact.

We have received two notices. (1) Nails wrapped in cheese at dog parks in Chicago and Massachusetts (see pic). (2) from some friends that in Augusta Maine dog park, antifreeze is being found in doggie water bowls. Please beware and be careful!

Voluntary Milk Bone Recall Alert

Milk Bone Dog Biscuit 10lb Delmonte Pet has a recall on Milk Bone Dog Biscuit 10lb. Code #90967 Milk Bone Dog Biscuits 10 lb (UPC 24000-92502) with lot code 12071k Only!

The FDA website had no information of this recall, so I called DelMonte. I was told "this is not a recall, we voluntarily pulled the product because mold was discovered after the product was in the market place." When I asked too many questions of the DelMonte consumer representative, she told me I was going to need to talk with 'someone else'. She took my name and number, I've waited three hours - no return call.

So, if your pet eats Milk Bones, please look for code #90967, UPC 24000-92502, lot code 12071k on the box. The product could contain mold to which we have no idea how dangerous this might be.

10 Tips Before Purchasing Your Dogs Costume

1) Choose the appropriate costume size according to your dog's build.
2) If your dog has never worn a costume before start with a bandana or hat.
3) Put the costume on each day for a few minutes and build up time so your dog can learn to tolerate wearing it.
4) Assure that it does not limit the dogs field of vision.
5) Never leave your dog unattended in a costume.
6) Avoid costumes with small pieces (such as beads for example) that can be swallowed.
7) Choose fabric that won't overheat your dog.
8) Make sure that elastic bands do not become uncomfortable.
9) Monitor your dog for signs of physical discomfort.
10) Watch for behavioral signs of stress, such as agitation or defensiveness.

Beware of the rain on your dogs coat.

Most of us know that rain causes that "wet-dog" smell. We also know that it causes sever matting in our dogs coats. Which can be painful to de-mat and very expensive. It can even get to the point where your dog may have to be shaved down to get tight mats out .that are too close to the skin. Improper removal of this type of matting can cause injury to dog if not removed by a vet and/or professional groomer. Most of us are unaware that it can also cause a skin irritation called "rain scald" or "rain rot".

"Rain scald" is actually an organism (dermatophilus congolensis) it is not a fungus. It is an actinomycetes that behaves like both a bacteria and a fungi. This is caused by warm, damp conditions where high temperature and humidity exist. It is not a life-threatening condition, but can make your pet very miserable, run a high fever and possible even have open sores.

At home you can wash your short coated dog with a 10% Betadine or Vetadine soap wash. It is best to have your dog professionally groomed where they can be washed with a medicated shampoo and dried thoroughly to the skin. After this process you want to continue to monitor your pets skin and keep them clean and dry.

Preventing Back to School Blues

How to tell if you pet has anxiety and/stress from children and/or parents returning to school:

a) pet maybe very clingy, when they were not before.
b) items are moved, torn up or signs of destruction show that your dog is venting.
c) morning dejected look.

Things that may help to ease your dog from the summer routine to back to school:

1) Importance of routine-for pet's routine is the first and foremost in making them feel safe

2) gradually reduce your interaction time with them during the hours you will be away (ex. potty trips, mealtime).

3) Feeding times are important-
a) if the dog is use to being fed later during the summer then you have to now leave for
school try feeding them just before your leave and not when you get up.
b) try to keep evening schedule as close to the same as you can.

4) Dirty laundry-you can leave a piece of dirty laundry in the pet's bed that has the kids scent to help comfort them.

5) Attention-devote a set amount of quality time to spend with your pet walking, playing their favorite game or just giving lots of attention. This will reassure the pet who maybe off balance.

It can be very overwhelming and sometime confusing when you are looking for a boarding facility for your dog. There are many different options available. Vet-Clinic with boarding attachment (usually minimal accommodations), Boarding Facility (usually minimal accommodations), Day Care with Boarding, Spa type Boarding (lots of amenities and priced accordingly) and in-home facilities.

Here are a few questions to help you make the best decision for you and your dog.

Vet-boarding, Boarding or Day Care Facilities:

1) staff qualifications
2) professional trainer present
3) nutritionist available, what will my dog eat
4) trained in emergencies, both medical and otherwise
5) vet on call 24/7
6) staffed overnight because a great deal happens between 9pm and 6am
7) inspect facility carefully is it clean and well organized. nothing to present danger to the dog.
8) room to run and play, fenced in area, isolation spot for those who don't adapt well, will my dog
interact with others
9) play equipment appropriate size for dogs
10) adequate sleeping area in appropriate size
11) waste disposed quickly inside and out
12) meet your scheduling needs
13) what happens if my dog gets sick and/or injured
14) if your dog requires medication is there an extra charge
15) do they pick up and deliver
16) is there grooming available

In-Home (additional questions and/or concerns to look for):

1) relatively clean and clear of small objects lying around for dog to choke on
2) no bones lying around, this can cause fights
3) where will your dog have free access
4) don't put your dog in a home that takes non-neutered or aggressive dogs
5) fenced in yard
6) gates that have latches
7) if they don't ask for your emergency number's, vets info and shots not a good sign
8) do you see water bowls around. dehydration is a killer.

Don't Let Your Dog Stick Their Head Out of the Car Window

Allowing your dog to let it stick its head out the window is a very dangerous habit. Their eyes are exposed to dirt, rocks, dust and other debris. These materials can easily puncture and scratch your dog's eyes.

Damage to the ears is another big concern. When the dog's ears flap in the wind, their soft earflaps (pinnae) can easily become irritated, swell and become very tender. The constant and rapid flapping of the pinnae against your dog's head from high-speed winds causes trauma to the ear and results in swelling. Repeated trauma such as this can cause lifelong problems for your pup.

Allowing your dog to stick its head out the window can also lead to more severe outcomes, such as falling out of the car or getting their head stuck in the window opening. Taking a turn a bit too fast, traveling over bumpy terrain or an overly excited pup can cause your dog to lose balance and easily fall out of the window. These types of incidents occur more frequently than one might imagine and can cause severe injury or death to dogs.

The best place for your dog to ride is in the back seat or cargo area of your vehicle, properly restrained of course. Utilizing a pet safety belt, car seat, vehicle pet barrier, or a travel crate is the best ways to ensure that your pup's travels are happy and safe. Sure, crack the window, but no heads out!

Ol' Roy soft & moist is a dog food distributed by Walmart. This food contains an additive known as ethoxquin (listed on it's label). This is additive is used in things like fish meal without the consumers knowledge. Many veterinarians believe that ethoxquin causes Cancer in pets.

Pet food regulations make the manufacturers list only the ingredients they add to the product and not the ingredients and/or preservatives added by their suppliers. So make sure to read the ingredients label on all of your pet foods, chews and treats. Please don't be afraid to call the manufacturer directly to get a list of all ingredient suppliers used in the products as well.

Do You Know the Volume of Pet Food Imported from China?

In February of 2011 over $21 million in food, treats, chews and ingredients (example, vitamins and minerals) are imported from China. This is up 4% from February 2010. If you happen to call the manufacturer and ask the origin of all ingredients they forget that their vitamins and minerals are sourced from China.

Over twenty-one million dollars in one month of pet food related imports came from China...yet MSNBC.com reported (in 2007) that only "1.3 percent of imported fish, vegetables, fruit and other foods are inspected".

The USDA researched that the most common causes of FDA refusal of imported goods from China (as cited problem by the FDA) - "filth, unsafe additives, inadequate labeling, and lack of proper manufacturer registrations" as well as "potentially harmful veterinary drug residues in farm-raised fish and shrimp".

If even one ingredient is sourced from China, you must then decide if that pet food or treat is worth the risk.

1) Don't shave long-coated dogs for the summer. Exposes skin to the sun damage. Coat acts as barrier for UV rays, instead thin the coat.

2) Dogs experiencing hair loss need special treatment and are more at risk and where you live also play an important part in this (new england as apposed to australia).

3) Protect serious sunbathers can develop tumors on vulnerable stretch of skin where the belly and hind legs meet. This area is unprotected even on furry breeds.

4) How to help a sunburn dog is to give him a soothing bath with cool water and a gentle soap-free product like Thera Neem Pet Shampoo.

5) Select proper sunscreen. Natural Dog Snout Soother (spf 10), Aubrey Organics Green Tea Sunblock for Children (spf 25) and Jason Kids' Block (spf 46).

Did you know that your dog can get sunburn? Yes they can.

Dog's that are most prone to getting sunburn are:
white and/or light colored hair, short and/or no hair, loss of hair (due to allergies, surgeries or medical treatments).

Prone Spots: nose, end of ears, around the mouth, eyelids and underbelly.

Prevention: adequate shelter (esp. during 10am to 3pm), pet sunscreen (human sunscreen is toxic), bodysuits UV protection, and leaving the hair a little longer to help as a barrier.

Shave-Downs of Fur-Bearing Dogs

It is a well-known fact within the animal medical community and experienced grooming salons that shave-downs of fur-bearing dogs may lead to alopecia (hair loss) and skin disease. These dogs fall under the category of "Coat Funk" that is caused by or triggered by the shave down of the fur-bearing dog. Examples are: the Black Skin Disease, Alopecia X, Sebaceous Adentis and Post Shaving or Post Clipping Alopecia to mention a few.

Shave-downs of fur-bearing dogs should only be done for medical reasons and with written directions from the veterinarian. Cosmetic choices such as owner wants to reduce shedding or make the pet feel more comfortable in summer heat are unacceptable reasons to have the pets hair shaved down.

If a dog is shaved for cosmetic purposes and develops "Coat Funk" it is assumed that the groomer caused the disease. This is why it is important to have a written request from the veterinarian before performing any shave-down of fur-bearing dogs. Groomers should also have the owners sign a waiver exempting the groomer from any skin and/or coat damage post shave down.

Experienced groomers should and would instead suggest the regular bathing and brush outs of the pet will help with the shedding and the pet being hot during the summer weather. This helps to keep out packing of hair and dirt which do not allow the skin to breath.

Dogs do not sweat through their skin like humans. They sweat through the pads of their feet and their nose. Once a dogs temperature reaches 106 degrees damage to the cellular system and organs may be irreversible.

Signs:

*Tacky or dry mucus membranes, specially gums

Owners have a lot of questions regarding their pets nails. Such as: my dogs nails look long, were they cut? My dogs nails are so sharp, did you forget to cut them? As you can see by the photo above dogs nails have a blood line inside. Your groomer or vet can only cut to just before this blood line. When the line get's crossed the nails can bleed (which both professionals carry a styptic powder to help clot and stop the bleeding) and this can be painful to your pet. Also you can see by above that cutting creates a clean square edge. This edge is very sharp when first cut and becomes smoother over time. Ways that you can help you dog to smooth out these edges are by taking them for regular walks on hard surfaces (like pavement or concrete). You can also file them with an emery board at home. When first introducing this you can start by working on one nail at time slowly and over time you can help you dog become accustom to the filing. It can become part of your regular routine and bonding time with just a little practice.

Local groomers confused after BP rejects dog hair for oil spill

Northborough's Dawn Giovannucci, one of thousands of dog groomers across the country pitching in to help clean up the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, thought the boxes of pet fur clippings she was shipping south were being used to sop up pools of toxic oil.
But after hearing Friday's announcement that British Petroleum was not planning on using the hair, she's not sure what to think.
"I don't know what's going on, but I did receive a press release from the agency in charge of the hair effort," she said yesterday. "They basically said they might have jumped the gun a little bit."
The president of that organization - an environmental charity called Matter of Trust - said she's confused, too.
"One department at BP told us to open the floodgates and send all the hair we could find," Lisa Gautier said yesterday from her San Francisco office. "But on Friday another department in the same building told us they couldn't use the hair."
Gautier said she was contacted May 15 by BP's Houma, La., Critical Resources Materials Management Department and told to send as much dog hair as possible. But Friday's press release issued by BP's public affairs office said the company would not use the hair, preferring to use other means instead.
"One problem with the hair boom is that it became water-logged and sank within a short period of time," said Charlie Henry, a scientific support coordinator for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, who was quoted in the press release.
Hair booms, which are essentially breathable nylon nets packed to the brim with pet fur, are currently being produced by volunteers working in 19 warehouses along the Gulf Coast.
The press release went on to state that a "commercial sorbent (absorbing) boom is readily available and scientifically designed and tested" for oil containment and absorption, citing a February 2010 side-by-side field test comparing sorbent and hair booms.
"On Monday I sent out 28 pounds of fur," Marquel Johnson, the manager at the Flying Fur pet grooming shop in Medway, said yesterday. "I'm going to keep collecting more because I'm not sure what to believe, and I just want to help any way I can."
Gautier said she asked groomers and salon owners who signed up after BP's Friday (May 21) announcement to wait for emergency alerts before sending more hair to the Gulf Coast.
"I had not heard the quote about the hair booms sinking," she said. "Whoever said that does not understand that we never intended for the hair booms to be stand-alone floatation devices.
"The booms would be marked and retrieved the same way fishermen use lobster buoys."
Giovannucci said she's still collecting hair.
She said John Gallagher, the Northborough Post Office officer-in-charge, had come in earlier and picked up a box of dog hair.
"He told me he'd have them delivered for free," she said.
Each week Giovannucci said she receives an e-mail from Matter of Trust that contains directions telling her where to ship the excess hair.
"This time our boxes are going to a warehouse in Florida," she said.
Gautier said she hopes BP's decision not to use the hair booms will only be temporary.
"These natural, renewable fibers are extremely effective, and any reports to the contrary are false," she said.

Well as the year comes to a close my staff and I would like to thank all of our loyal guests who come to A Diamond in the Ruff! We LOVE all our pups and really enjoy them all!! I also enjoy coming to work every single day (of course the dogs make us all feel that way), but I have the BEST staff and I want to thank them as well for a wonderful year!

Stacey our full time day care "mom" is so sweet with all of the dogs, but don't let her size fool you - she won't take any crap either! She knows all their personalities and spends all her time with them! As many of you know Stacey had a "ruff" year because she broke her arm playing Women's Professional Football (YES! I said football - defense even)! She came back like a trooper and is now healed - I think the dogs love had something to do with this! YES - she is starting up another year of football - keep your fingers crossed for her! The dogs are so attached to her and I think she's just as attached to them!
Avery who started with me as a bather is now a grooming assistant and is grooming dogs on her own! She is also an equine student at Becker College and LOVES all animals! She comes to work EVERY DAY with a smile on her face ready to have fun and learn! I'm very proud of her accomplishments and look forward to her "nothing gets me down" attitude every day! She is great with all the dogs and you can tell how much they trust her!
Kelly is our newest addition - working double duty you might say...she comes in every morning ready to greet the dogs and give baths, then she shifts gears to take over for Stacey and do the afternoon daycare "mom" shift! She LOVES the dogs and has a very gentle, soft way with all of them. She has tons of dog experience from volunteering in shelters and working in veterinarians office and is great at reading the dogs body language and a knack for knowing what they want!

I look forward to watching our little company grow and I hope that you as clients would like to grow with me and my wonderful staff! I want to wish everyone a safe, healthy, happy and prosperous New Year!!!

We have a nice little community of businesses including Emener Stove who is busy installing TONS of pellet stoves, Ortho Med Massage Clinic where you can get a soothing massage (for yourself) and of course A Diamond in the Ruff Day Spa and Day Care for your dogs! Archie's on a Roll Hot Dog Truck serves hot dogs with a variety of toppings including homemade Michigan Sauce and Chilli! A Diamond in the Ruff didn’t know what to expect when we reserved a booth at Applefest. This being our first year at Applefest we were happy to see so many wagging tails! We adorned our booth space with fall decorations, free doggie treats and “diamond” ring pops for the kids! We had many people stop by asking what a Day Spa for dogs is and we were happy to explain! A Day Spa is a grooming salon that is relaxing and soothing for your pets (we play relaxing meditation music, have a running water fountain and use aromatherapy). We offer a wide range of spa packages from our famous blueberry facial to dead sea mineral scrubs. We have a shed-less package, a pooch bright whitening package, and everything in between. We do not over-book so your pup gets the attention he/she deserves. We pride ourselves on the fact that your precious pup will be ready to go home as soon as grooming is completed. We can also accommodate your schedule if you have appointments to keep!

We all had a great time at Applefest and there were so many other wonderful booths selling scarfs, jewelry, and so many other fun items for kids and adults! The food and the band were great and it was nice to see so many people having fun! Our favorite was the booth where you could make your own hat out of a paper bag and stickers!

Also, a great place to get food is less than a mile from us at Pets Gone Healthy on Route 20 in Marlborough on the Northborough line! They really know their stuff there!

A bubble bath, a Dead Sea mineral scrub, a blueberry face mask and a pedicure. What a great day at the spa - for a dog!
Dawn Giovannucci, owner of A Diamond in the Ruff, a Northborough-based day spa for dogs, says she named the spa so it would sound upscale, with a day-spa feel for the canine set.
"I wanted people to come in here and feel comfortable leaving their dogs here," she said.
Walking through the spa’s double doors, visitors see the walls are painted a sage green with twinkling lights lined in the crevices where the wall meets the ceiling. There’s also a water fountain, lit aromatherapy candles and soothing music playing all-day long.
The dogs are divided into two groups when they arrive. The large dogs weighing more than 31 pounds hang out with Cash, a 4-year-old Great Dane, in the Barker Lounge, a large room with, appropriately enough, a lounge motif. The clients are surrounded by pictures of pups playing pool and cards.
The smaller dogs, weighing less than 31 pounds, play with Sabrina, a 10-year-old bichon frise, in the Pampered Pooch Palace, a pink, purple, gold and black, princess-hemed room named after Giovannucci’s first grooming salon.
The rooms are designed to fit the needs of the dogs with a rubber floor for their knees and feet, cages for when they tire themselves out and need a nap, and ample playing space.
"The dogs love Michelle (Nowland), our full-time day-care attendant, and Kelly (Ramsdell), our part-time assistant day-care attendant," Giovannucci said.When these pampered pooches come in for a styling, Giovannucci and her two assistants are ready to make the hounds feel as beautiful as diamonds.
The spa offers a wide variety of services and packages. The Diamond Package includes the aforementioned Dead Sea mineral scrub and a facial for $25. The Ruby Package includes a special natural skin coat care and aromatherapy shampoo, teeth cleaning, pedicure and massage for $20. The Sapphire Package includes a special shampoo that rids bad odors and skin irritation for $15. The Pooch Bright Package is a whitening shampoo for white dogs for $10 while the Shed Less Package for Labrador retrievers trims its undercoat for $20. The Paw-dicure and facial package includes a blueberry facial massage, a bubble bath paw treatment and painted nails for $20.
Solo features include a spa bubble bath for $10, a flea bath for $10, a blueberry facial for $15, a mineral scrub for $15, rhinestones on the dogs toes for $3 per toe, toe nails painted for $10, and an express groom in under two hours for $20.Grooming Monday through Friday begins at 8 a.m. However, owners can drop their pets off earlier if it’s necessarily. Grooming ends at 2 p.m. The spa is also open Saturdays for grooming from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
"We stand out because we’re different," Giovannucci said. "There isn’t any other place like us. There are other grooming and day-care places in the area but no spa. We even call the owner when their dog is done being groomed unlike other places that keep the dog there for eight or more hours."
The prices of day care at A Diamond in the Ruff are very similar to those of other day care facilities.
For larger dogs, a single visit is $30 per day and a 10-day pass is $260. For smaller dogs, a single visit is $25 and a 10-day pass is $210. Owners can drop their dog off Monday through Friday at 7 a.m. and pick them up as late as 6 p.m.
"We try to work with the customer," she said. "If they want a 17-day pass we figure something out so that it can work for them. Customers generally know how many days they will be coming a month by the end of the previous month so we work with them to see what we can arrange."
Clientele for this new company has grown to close to 300 clients since it opened in April.
"I would say that by the end of the year, we will be fully booked for day care," Giovannucci said. "Right now we are booking one to two weeks in advance for grooming and the day spa."

Some people ask us why we have a blog and a my space page when we have such a gorgeous website!? The Answer is simple - our website will always be a work in progress but, not as easy to change as a blog or a my space page! I can quickly get to these pages and post pictures, news, updates, etc... faster than we can on our website!

We thought you'd like to see some pictures of our beautiful place so we took a few today! Upon entering A Diamond in the Ruff you see and FEEL the difference in our salon and day care that sets us apart from the rest! We have our lobby/reception area painted a nice shade of calming greens, have soothing music and aromatherapy with a cute "cafe" style table and chairs! Our salon is clean and bright, with a separate bathing area! We offer many spa packages so check out our website for more on the spa! Our day care rooms are The Pampered Pooch Palace for our little prince and princesses and you'll see from our decorations the room is fit for a King and Queen! Our large dog area is appropriately named The Barker Lounge - there's a lot of barking and a lot of lounging going on in there! It really has a nice lounge atmosphere! Sometimes we wonder if old blue eyes is in there!

Also thought you might like to meet our newest "Diamond Girls" Kelly and Michelle who both work in the day care rooms! Both of whom have extensive dog knowledge, and come highly recommended (their info will be up on our staff page on the website shortly)!

Birthday Bash for Cash!

We LOVE all our dogs at A Diamond in the Ruff! So if we know of a special day we like to celebrate it! Cash's mom Carol brought everyone in day care (in both The Pampered Pooch Palace and The Barker Lounge) a special treat from our FAVORITE Health Food Store for Dogs - Pets Gone Healthy in Marlborough! Cash had a special cookie with white frosting and it said Happy Birthday in blue frosting on it! Everyone else had their choice of a peanut butter or chocolate dog or a fire hydrant! I got party hats and everyone had a party hat and cookie! We had a blast and a lot of laughs singing happy birthday to Cash and trying to get Alex the Basset Hound to howl along with us! Cash didn't know what to do with his special treat, but once he figured out what it was he was in HEAVEN! As soon as the treats came out everyone retreated to their crates to lay on their comfy beds and eat their yummy treat!

Northborough, MA April, 2008 - A Diamond in the Ruff, Northborough’s only day spa and day care for dogs held its open house on April 5th and 6th, 2008. A Diamond in the Ruff opened its doors to the public, offering tours of its day spa and two day care areas (The Barker Lounge for larger dogs, and The Pampered Pooch Palace for the small dogs), served refreshments to prospective clients, and offered gift bags for the dogs. Many visitors brought their dogs with them to meet the staff and “sniff out” the new spa.

A Diamond in the Ruff also held a free raffle. Prizes included Red Sox memorabilia, gift baskets, and gift certificates. The grand prize an authentic Red Sox warm-up jacket was won by Northborough resident and A Diamond in the Ruff client, Buddy Fucci (seen here sitting on the chair at the table helping himself to some gourmet treats) and his mother Linda! NO ONE went home empty handed though! Everyone got a special goody bag before they left! Drs. Margo Roman and Ronna Kabler presented their “must-see documentary” Dr. DoMore, which provides an overview of holistic health care and healing options for the beloved pet.
